Khongthong, the country's only "whistling village," where residents often interact with one another by whistling, has been nominated for UNESCO heritage status by a BJP MLA in Meghalaya.

Sanbor Shullai, a lawmaker from East Khasi Hills district, recently met with Professor J S Rajput, India's representative on the UNESCO Executive Board, to request that the remote village in the East Khasi Hills district be designated as an intangible cultural heritage site.

Residents of the village have ‘whistling names,' which they use to communicate with one another in addition to their formal names.”

Professor Rajput has informed me that he will take up the matter with the Union Ministry of Cultural Affairs,” the legislator said on Tuesday to PTI.

Shullai also met Rajya Sabha MP Rakesh Sinha, who had adopted the village and ensured that government schemes, such as road and health care, were implemented.

The MP pledged that the village will receive all necessary assistance and that there would be sustainable livelihood growth for sustainable self-employment without jeopardising Khongthong's cultural heritage, according to the BJP legislator.
